I 'm at a loss. I have no faith in our government's ability to turn it around. The US has been turned into a global empire, its tendrils reaching far and wide. Powerful men have been gnawing at the foundation of our country and our livelihoods. All empires fall. Anyone else get this funny feeling?

When grasp exceeds reach...

When we overextend ourselves..

It brings to mind that joker from the movie Aliens

"Game over man, game over!"

  1. yes, time to flee.

  2. Don't wait until it takes a wheelbarrow full of dollars to buy a loaf of bread.  I have that funny feeling that the American spending party is officially over and the consequences of it are just starting to be felt.  I think we are watching history in the making and decades from now the History channel will be running a mini-series on the downfall of America if we don't get our act together, buckel down and live within our means as individuals and as a country.

  3. If you can go to a different country, do so.

Even though I think America will some day get back, it will take some time.

and even if the American empire falls I think the country will still stand and have a stable economy (even if it is no longer the world's super power)

  4. Nothing is Forever... Just like the Roman Empire is no more.

  5. It's a bad year.  It happens.

  6. Your view is what most would call "a glass half-empty".

We're not in a depression, we're not even officially in a recession yet (although I cant be so ignorant to say that this ISNT one. I would agree that we're in a recession). Things arent nearly as bad as they were in the Great Depression.  Unemployment rates are relatively low, unlike the millions upon millions unemployed in the 1920s.

As for the war? You bet it's unnecessary. It's hurting us economically and is the biggest waste of American and Iraqi life arguably in the history of this country. I mean, at least we were defending South Korea in the Vietnam War. This war is just stupid.

Corporations run "rampant"? Whats your point? Corporations have been around for a long, long time. We have anti-trust laws that prevent evil monopolies to take hold. At least we're not in the times of Rockefeller or William Herst, they would monopolize certain markets and buy all of the smaller operations out of business. If they did not accept the buyout, they would make sure, in devious ways, that the small businesses failed.

Inflation is higher than it has been, but again, it's not nearly as bad as the inflationary period in the 70s. Plus, it could be worse--- we could be in a period of deflation. That's when, in the hilarious words of Bill Paxton in "Aliens", it is "Game over man, game over!"

I think the media is certainly hyping up the situations in this country. One of the biggest threats to our economy right now is the failure of mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. That is a serious threat that must be addressed immediately. They hold 5 trillion dollars worth of mortgages, and if they fail, we're in big trouble as a nation. A big suggestion is that the companies become nationalized, but the shareholders to the two companies would get hosed, so naturally, billionaire shareholders are screaming bloody murder and preventing such a measure to pass. In addition, it would damage the value of the dollar, and much, much more.

We're indeed an empire, and times are gettin a little tigher, but if we fall as the Romans did so long ago, we'll just have to wait many, many more years.

  7. ...I wonder how many people have asked about whether a depression is going to occur?  But I'm giving the same answer everytime.  I know that not everyone is liking my answer, but Everything will be okay.  There is not a depression now, we may be in a recession.  But maybe not- there isn't proof of negative GDP (growth of GDP) and even if there is when stats of it are released in the fall, it doesn't mean we're going to be in a depression.  Things AREN'T as bad as they can be nor will they get THAT BAD.  Inflation, while hampering, is moderate from what I hear.  The number of banks closing is while a bit bad, not that high.  That is if you compare it to twenty years ago with the savings and loans crisis.

Some analysis says that oil prices may be reaching a peak. so there's hope.  http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/17/busine...

And as for the war, yes it was something we shouldn't have gotten into.  But there has been progress- very good progress in Iraq and we can't pull out now.

Things are not as bad as life was in the Great Depression.  Even though life isn't that great and the economy is bad, it is something that can be beatable.  Our economy will grow and improve.

And no the US will not collapse.  Maybe it may lose some dominance to China, but it will still be strong.  One example of how an empire "fell" but still stayed strong is Britain.  Another country who used to be a superpower yet is still in good shape now is France.  The US, even if it loses its #1 rank in economics and military, will stay strong and be towards the top, if not remain the top country.

    Things will improve. ..

  8. Yes yes yes!!!!!  I just told my boyfriend yesterday tha we need to seriously consider moving, becoming e-pats because  I have that nausaus feeling too.  I think a lot of people will disagree with you.  A lot of Americans are Rah! Rah! to America.  But that's the problem I think.  A lot of Americans are too stupid to know they're  *&^&%!ed  and that is who our country is full of...   As an old friend of mine would say "It's lookin' pretty grim".  NOW the question is what is the best Country for us to go?
