Economics Book!?

I am an American; I do not understand the inner workings of the United States Economy or the Worldwide Economy. I would like to further my understanding about the two. Can any of you recommend to me a good book for a complete beginner that would help me to better understand economics?

    The book is:

    "International Economics" by Thomas Pugel (2006) 13th Edition

    This is the HOLY BIBLE of all my economics books because it tells about TARIFFS, CROP SUBSIDIES, CAUSE & EFFECT RELATIONSHIPS, and is a STRONG reference guide for whats going on in the world. I have a copy of it and you can buy it cheap from eBay from this link:
