I am currently an economics major. I was wondering whether finance and economics are "the same." Could you get the same job with either major?

  1. Different but related. Economics is broader than finance and helps explain how finance works to a certain extent. For example, the backbone of financial theory is essentially economic theory.

As for "Could you get the same job with either major?" it depends on what job you are talking about. If you want an economic consultant, i.e. an economist, then obviously economics is the way to go. If you want to be a financial analyst, then be a finance major. Or if less obvious, like marketing research analyst, then economics may be better, since it is so broad that it should cover some aspects of marketing research as well.

  2. No.  They are definitely not the same. However there are some overlaps in terms of jobs you are qualified for.  Finance is more practical, and easier to apply directly to the job market.
