For many decades northern unionized textile workers were strong supporters of higher minimum wages. Since these workers all made significantly more than the minimum wage, they were often asked why they supported raising the minimum wage. They typically responded that they were concerned for the plight of their fellow workers. Can you provide an economic answer why these unionized workers were so interested in the minimum wage?

  1. The workers themselves were not so interested in raising the wages of others.  The union organizers were, because their basic premise is that capitalism exploits the worker, and they truly believe that not only union workers, but all workers should be protected from the ravages of capitalism.  In fact, the unions did many things to promote better working conditions for all workers in the US.  Unfortunately, global economics has negated their ability to control many working conditions, and things are not going to get better in the future.

  2. just to help their fellow workers and increase the living standard of people.
