  1. Before the war, the northern states were based on manufacturing and the southern states were primarily agricultural. The northern states were able to defeat the southern states because of this imbalance. In the north, rifles and cannon were manufactured at a high rate. In the south they had to buy from foreign makers. The shipping alone took months. Inadequate weapons and the poor state of supply ultimtely led to the defeat of the south.
