Ed Cowan attributes his dazzling Test debut to his ailing mother - Cricket News Update
The rookie Australian opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Graham-Downton-c44379 Cowan, has attributed his successful Test career start to his ailing mother, Jan, who is battling against a consequential neurological disorder.
The 29-year-old opening batsman, who hails from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-South-Wales-c823, made a stunning start to his Australian Test career with a half-century against the Indians in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne last week. The debutant scored valiant 68 before being declared
caught behind off Ashwin, a dismissal that was heavily criticised by the Australian media and could have been reverted if DRS was present.
Cowan said that he has taken the strength from his mother Jan, who was at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last week to watch her son don the baggy green.
"She's one tough lady...I get it from her," said Cowan in an interview to a leading daily magazine.
The 57-year-old Jan has been diagnosed with "a cross between Parkinson's and motor neurone disease". She has suffered an acute loss of vision and can no longer talk, but she has never allowed the neurological illness to be a deterrent.
Cowan said that despite being so ill, she has always motivated him and has supported him with his dreams. He also revealed that she will be there at Sydney Cricket Ground to watch his game.
"When I moved to Tassie, I went with her blessing," said Cowan.
"She was really supportive of me following my dream, so for her to be there (at the SCG) is really emotional for me... Her eyes have got progressively worse, so she finds it hard to see things. But for her to be at the SCG this week means the world to me,”
he added further.
Cowan said that doctors have given up on his mother's condition and they are unsure of how long she will survive. He said that it was really hard to see his mum physically decay when mentally she is fine.
However, he regarded himself lucky for having his mother around when he needs her the most.
