Ed Cowan scores a brilliant century to give Tasmania a lead over Victoria
Tasmania took a seven run lead over Victoria until tea, on the second day of a Sheffield Shield match at Hobart.
The wicket at Hobart was good for the bowlers on the first day but it has eased out to some extent. However, there is still some assistance for the bowlers in it if they bend their backs.
Tasmania had lost 3 batsmen for 74 runs on the first day. Earlier, they had dismissed Victoria for 233 on the same day.
Captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Bailey-c1480 and Ed Cowan started the day for Tasmania. The pair constructed a 52-run partnership and took their team to a relatively safe position. However, Bailey failed to capitalize on the start he got as he was dismissed for 26 runs.
The fall of Bailey brought Mark Cosgrove at the crease and he tried to lift the run-rate with some aggressive batting. Cosgrove struck five boundaries in his innings of 23 off 28 balls, but the over aggressive approach backfired as he lost his wicket
in an attempt to pressurize the opponents.
Cosgrove’s wicket brought http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Travis-Birt-c2707 at the crease and he supported Cowan well. Both constructed a 48-run partnership for the sixth wicket and took their total over 200.
Birt was looking solid until he edged one ball, which was held safely by the Victorian wicketkeeper behind the stumps. He was dismissed after scoring just 20 runs.
The fall of wickets didn’t bother the Tasmanian opener Cowan and he kept on playing with effortless ease. He scored a brilliant century and guided his team over the first innings total of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Victoria-c859.
Cowan was unbeaten on 101 when the umpires called the session off. He was joined by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Faulkner-c1643, who remained unbeaten on 7 until tea session.
The pair will be looking forward to extend their lead to as much as possible in the final session of play. Cowan’s innings will be very important for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 as he can give his team a healthy first innings lead.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Damien-Wright-c1304 took 2 wickets each for their team and they will be looking forward to grab some quick wickets in the last session in order to bounce back in the match.
The final session of play will be very important for both teams and it may decide the outcome of the match.
