Eddie Jordan, Vitantonio Liuzzi back proposed changes for Monaco circuit – Formula 1 news
Former owner of team Jordan Eddie Jordan and Hispania Racing Team driver Vitantonio Liuzzi have agreed that the barrier in front of the famous tunnel at Nouvelle Chicane of the Monaco Grand Prix should be changed.
That is the chicane where Sergio Perez crashed during qualifying this past weekend as a result of which, it is believed that the circuit is quite dangerous keeping in mind the new rules and regulations.
Perez was unable to control his Sauber as he ran slightly wide while exiting the curved tunnel. Due to that, his car slid sideways right into the barriers. Since the exit of the tunnel is a downward hill, the impact of his accident was around 80G because
of which the young driver suffered a concussion.
Eddie Jordan, the former team owner of Jordan also highlighted some of the reasons for the problems the drivers were facing while driving at the Monte Carlo circuit.
“It's probably a combination of things. The new aerodynamics, the tyres, the asphalt. It's always been a tricky place. The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) is required to protect the driver to the best of their ability,” said Jordan.
Hispania Racing Team driver Vitantonio Liuzzi and Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg had similar accidents as well but thankfully, neither of them hit the barrier.
“The tyres were reacting differently compared to last year's Bridgestones, the balance of the car was difficult to find and the tarmac had got a bit worse this year. These problems are exacerbated for a small team like us because we don't have as much downforce
on the car and it's not as pinned to the ground,” said Liuzzi when asked about the reasons.
Other than that, he added that the decision regarding the changes to the circuit has already been discussed in a meeting and it is believed that the organisers are going to do something about it next year. Nevertheless, the Italian driver added that drivers
still love racing there as it is one of the most technical circuits of the Formula 1 calendar.
