Eddie O’Sullivan cites USA Eagles fitness issues as reason for 62 point defeat by Wallabies – Rugby News
The United States of America’s national Rugby Union team, commonly known as the USA Eagles, head coach Eddie O’Sullivan has cited his sides poor fitness level for their 62 point defeat. The massive loss was suffered by the North Americans in their 2011 Rugby
World Cup’s (RWC) Pool C encounter against the Wallabies on Friday, September 23 at Westpac Stadium, Wellington.
O’Sullivan was critical of his side’s performance in the second-half of the game, where they allowed the Wallabies to score 45 points. He has expressed his utmost disappointment on the results of the game. He made the comments while talking to reporters
at the end of Friday’s game.
O’Sullivan added, “We probably didn't start off as strong as we could and I thought at the end we got a bit tired again. A lot of inexperienced players were struggling with pace and the Australians didn't let up on us tonight.”
The former Ireland head coach, O’Sullivan, has praised Eagles’ performance during certain phases of the game. He has expressed delight at his side's performance at the line-outs and in the passage when they controlled the ball possession. He said, “I thought
we played good rugby at times.”
Eagles made the Wallabies work hard whenever they were able to retain ball possession. They controlled the game midway through the first-half, which forced the Australians to commit mistakes. During this particular passage, the Eagles scored their only try
of the game through their number eight JJ Gagiano.
Wallabies ended the match with 11 tries, with most of the points being scored from the 50-meter line. O’Sullivan termed these long ranger tries as “killers.”
Brisbane born Tim Usasz, who was appointed as Captain of USA Eagles for their Wallabies encounter, has termed the match as a real good learning experience. He added that they had a few good passages of play but they were not good enough to maintain those
phases consistently.  He further added that each time they held ball possession they looked like a different unit. The Eagles captain also said that the team knows their mistakes and will do their best to ensure to not to make the same errors again.
USA Eagles will play their last match of the 2011 RWC against Italy on Tuesday, September 27.
