Eddy Curry continues to shred weight; Comeback into NBA gaining momentum
Eddy Curry seems to be serious about the upcoming NBA season, if there is one, and is continually working to get in shape. According to his trainer, Curry has lost plenty of weight in the offseason and is down to 300 lbs.
The trainer in question is Tim Grover, a legend in his own right who has worked with many NBA greats in the past. Grover spent the early part of the summer working with Turkish prodigy Enes Kanter, trying to get him in shape enough
to impress NBA scouts. Kanter was drafted as the 3rd overall pick this year.
Now Grover is helping Curry get back into shape so that he can land another stint with an NBA franchise. Eddy was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in midseason as part of the blockbuster trade that saw Carmelo Anthony move
to the New York Knicks. The Timberwolves though bought out his contract and he didn’t feature in a single game for them.
Now the free agent is working hard so that some team would take a risk with him. High on that list are the Miami Heat. It was visible in last season’s NBA Finals that Miami lacked the depth required to win an NBA World Championship.
They are thus looking to strengthen but Pat Riley will only offer Curry a contract if he impresses enough right now.
Now Grover has said that the former New York centre has dropped even more weight and is looking good for the next season. A player who saw Curry train revealed to reporters that,
“You watch him shoot and he’s got great touch, good hands” he continued. “He’s very skilled. But it’s a question of whether he gets more serious. He’s got a long way to go.”
That attitude is and has been a major concern for Eddy throughout his career. The centre was always very talented and was drafted as the fourth overall pick back in 2001. He, alongside Tyson Chandler, was highly thought of in Chicago
where the Chicago Bulls planned on building a successful dynasty around the two.
However both saw their careers derailed due to negligence and injuries. While Chandler got back on track in the last few years and redeemed himself in Dallas, where he won the NBA World Championship with the Dallas Mavericks last
season, Eddy has failed to make any impact.
He weighed 350 lbs back in March and looked a far cry from the player who averaged 19.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game for the Knicks in 2006-07, perhaps the one season he played close to his potential.
Whichever team takes him on for next season would be hoping he can rediscover some kind of form.
