Edgar Renteria shines as Cincinnati Reds defeat San Francisco Giants 4-3 – MLB Update
Edgar Renteria touched a walk off single in the thirteenth inning to help the Cincinnati Reds snap a four-game-losing streak against the San Francisco Giants at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 29 to take 1-0 lead in three-game series.
Cincinnati had come after losing their four-straight games and they were bewildered when they saw their starter Dontrelle Willis allowing a single in the start of the first inning. However, their batters did not lose hope and got a 2-1 lead in the bottom
of the first inning. Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce each scored an RBI single off the Giants’ starter Ryan Vogelsong.
Drew Stubbs scored the third run to create some positive room for his pitcher, who then held the Giants’ strong batting squad silent with his sinkers. Just before Willis ended his six innings spell, the Giants’ Aubrey Huff collected a single on a sacrifice
fly to centre-fielder.
Nick Masset took the ball to forward the pitching performance but he tossed just fourteen pitches before his manager Dusty Baker relieved him with Bill Bray. He completed the seventh inning and carried his impetus to the eighth. However, he allowed a walk
and then a hit that helped the Giants tie the game 3-all in the top of the eighth inning.
After this inning, pitchers from both sides made a perfect rebound and held the opposing batters under constant pressure.
Giants’ Santiago Casilla, Sergio Romo, Ramon Ramirez, Javier Lopez and Guillermo Mota remained scoreless over their short spell. On the other hand, the Reds’ Francisco Cordero and Aroldis Chapman did not consume any run while closer Jose Arredondo out-performed
the Giants’ Brian Wilson to take his team to a stunning win.
"Our bullpen is extremely tired but they gutted it out tonight," Baker said. "It could have been a big downer but these guys kept fighting and fighting. Willis went deep in the ballgame but it didn't work. We still had to use guys I wanted to stay away from."
Short-stop Edgar Renteria entered the field for his second at-bat and singled to deep right-field to gather game generating run against Wilson. The 35-year-old hurler added his 20th RBI of the season.
It was a real sigh of relief for the Reds, as they managed to break their losing streak with this much needed victory over the Giants.
