Edgar Sosa nails Wilbert Uicab to become number one contender for Sony Boy Jaro’s gold – Boxing news
Edgar Sosa, the current WBC international flyweight champion, put forth the Mexican crowd an epic performance and collected a unanimous win over fellow countryman Wilbert Uicab, eventually relinquishing him from his WBC silver flyweight gold, in a 12-round
bout held on April 7, 2012.
With this win Sosa has become the number one contender for Sonny Boy Jaro’s WBC flyweight gold. The ring for the bout was stretched at Oasis Hotel Complex situated in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico and the Sosa-Uicab duo headlined the event.
The pay-per-view, jointly promoted by Ricardo Maldonado of Producciones Deportivas and Jose Gomez of Cancun Boxing, was co-headlined by the engagement between Humberto Soto and Claudinei Lacerda.
Sosa, 32, entering in his career’s 52nd bout and boasted 44 wins with 27 of them via knockout. In addition, Sosa recently nailed Roilo Golez to grab the WBC international flyweight gold and proudly resides at the 10th position in the world rankings. The
whole scenario becomes sweeter for Sosa when it comes to height, reach, and knockout proficiency advantage.
Edgar’s opponent, Wilbert, is also considered as one of the best flyweights in Mexico. The 28-year Uicab has been in a total 41 bouts and has an impressive 33 wins, 7 losses, and one draw decision in his resume.
Wilbert has nailed 18 of his opponents via knockout and a keener look at knockout proficiency and win percentage clearly showed Edgar’s upper hand over Wilbert. Wilbert, infamous as the ‘Huracan’, did start things in an emphatic way in fact stunned Edgar
by his powerful jabs.
Edgar followed a slow pace and was extremely careful in picking his shots. Wilbert took full advantage of Sosa’s hesitancy and placed well targeted fists. In the very first round, Wilbert shocked the whole Oasis complex by throwing a huge rocking jab that
flattened Sosa on the ring floor.
Everyone was shocked to see their country’s ace pugilist on the ring floor but later on, from fifth round and onwards, Edgar’s experience came in to aid him. Sosa started to get active on his feet and threw almost invisible jabs which inflicted maximum damage
so much so that in the sixth round a powerful right hand connected and rattled Wilbert eventually flattening him on the ring floor.
The 12-round bout ended with Edgar collecting a 114-111 score on all the three cards to grab not only the WBC silver flyweight gold but also the number one spot for the WBC flyweight gold.
Edgar, who now has 45 wins in his account, will take on Sony Boy Jaro in his next bout. It must be noted that this will be the second time Sony and Sosa will meet in the ring. In their 2008 battle, Sosa successfully collected a unanimous decision win over
Jaro and defended his WBC flyweight gold.
