Edgbaston wicket will favour spinners - http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ashley-Fraser-Giles-c46314 – Cricket News Update
The Warwickshire's director of cricket, Ashley Giles has said that the wicket at Edgbaston will favour the spinners when England will play India at the venue in the third Test of the four-match series commencing on Wednesday, August 10.
The construction of four-storey pavilion has reduced the conventional swing the pitch used to offer to the pace bowlers, but Giles said that it has still some reverse swing to offer to the pace bowlers.
"The ball has always swung at Edgbaston, the difference this year is that the wind swirls around more inside the bowl than it did because the prevailing wind comes from the direction of the new stand," Giles was quoted as saying by a leading UK daily.
The sand-based outfield was also part of the overhaul carried out at the venue since the Poms last played here in August 2010. The sand based outfield led to dry pitches which will help the spin bowlers extract turn from the surface. The rough surface will
provide reverse swing to the fast bowlers.
"The ball might start to reverse earlier now than in the past as the ground is very dry and abrasive due to the outfield,” said the former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 spinner. “I think the pitches will generally spin more until we can get the water levels right. Some have turned
this year, others haven't," he added further.
After scripting convincing wins at the Lord’s and Trent Bridge, England are currently leading the four-match series 2-0. The hosts won the series opener at Lord’s by 196 runs before thrashing the current numero uno Test side by 319 runs at Trent Bridge and
must be eager to confirm their spot at the top of ICC’s Test rankings table with a win at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
So far it had been the England pace attack leading from the front in the past wins but this time Graeme Swann-led spin attack must be eager to prove a point at the spin-friendly Edgbaston deck.
