Which suburb is better to live in. We are a family of Mum 28; Dad 30; Child 5 and Child 1. We like the nicer things in life if you know what I mean. We are moving in September of this year and have heard that the above suburbs are the best to live in... appreciate any thoughts..thanks heaps!

  1. i lived in Cairns for over 20 years!!!  i actually grew up in Whitfield and then Edge Hill...

so i biased in that my friends still live mostly in Edge Hill and Manunda and Manoora....

email me if you want a more detailed answer...or any other questions that you might have...

when i move back to Cairns (I live in the US right now) i would be looking to buy in either Edge Hill or Whitfield or even Kanimbla...all are beautiful areas, close to town and everything else...

  2. All these places are expensive,

Edge Hill is close to the city of Cairns, alot of business couples live here , no views but nice houses and close to the botanical gardens .

Palm Cove is gorgeous, THE place for the millionaires ,beautiful long beach ( don't forget the box jellyfish though and use the stinger nets to swim when needed)

Palm Cove is a long way from Cairns and if you have to commute each day you will tire of the huge roundabouts ! (wrecks your tyres)

If you like a quiet lifestyle walking along the beach etc this is the place .Beautiful sea breezes also.

Trinity beach is closer to town , full of families ,mix of people ,not as posh so to speak , more apartments.

A small beach , but some nice restaurants and small shopping centre. Also has a private school if you are interested .

All areas offer something different, it depends on how busy or quiet you want your lifestyle to be,

Personally I would choose either Edge Hill or Palm Cove .

How far you wish to be from Cairns itself would govern your choice,

  3. I lived in Sydney chasing the dream and after many years moved to Cairns to escape what you are looking for. So I would re-consider moving as Cairns is not a city with well defined socio-economic boundaries with the correct style of people populating a significant area. That is why I love it. Otherwise Me and many others would never have re-located.

There are some areas I would not live but if you have say a 1million dollar budget to buy a property then you will have something real real nice.

Palm Cove has a very beautiful esplanade area but it is 100% tourism. So people who live there are not in prime position and pay just to be close. I considered buying there at one stage when dirt cheap but the house was ordinary compared to same priced homes elsewhere. No view, small land etc etc and many owner interstate investors, not residents,

Trinity Beach is ok but some gang related issues.

All beaches are pretty poor in comparison to southern states.

Some new developments near Palm Cove and Trinity Beach may suit.

Rainforest, hillslope properties with views are very sought after.

Edge Hill, they say Paddington of Cairns...well not really lol..but parts are nice, parts so so. The great part is close to gorgeous parklands, botanic gardens, tank arts centre and the city. So is a great spot but not sure you will see what you expect.

You musy try before you buy, not a professional hub type of place. Lots of rich fisherman, tilers, builders rather than doctors, lawyers and accountants. Even quite a few rich hippies.

However sounds like you should be moving to Sydney to be honest. Not knocking it, been there myself but rejected it at later stage in life. At 30 you have the energy to deal with materialistic driven stresses.
