Edin Dzeko still disappointed over failed Juve move
Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko has expressed his sorrow at being denied a move to Italian giants Juventus this summer. Dzeko, who has hit an astonishing 48 goals in the last two Bundesliga
seasons, has been attracting interest from many of Europe’s biggest clubs throughout the summer.
However, it was only Juve who showed concrete interest but despite the move looking likely to be agreed, the two clubs couldn’t agree on a fee, and the switch fell through. For Dzeko,
this was a huge setback: “I cannot hide being sorry for failing to move to Juventus,” stated the Bosnian striker. Dzeko has been at Wolfsburg since 2007, and has acquired a Bundesliga winners medal, a taste of Champions League football and a top-scorer accolade
just last term in that time, but felt that now was the right time to take his career forwards and perhaps land a move to one of the considered big three leagues, in Italy, England or Spain.
Wolfsburg and Juventus have done other business in the summer, with big-money flop Diego offloaded to the German club for around £7m less than the £21m paid for the Brazilian just last
summer. There was talk of a swap deal involving Dzeko and Diego, but neither club could agree on the deal – much to Dzeko’s annoyance. “Until the end I believed that Wolfsburg and Juventus could find an agreement, especially when the two clubs opened negotiations
for Diego, but unfortunately things didn't go the way I wanted,” Dzeko recounted.
Its not all doom and gloom for the Bosnian though, as Wolfsburg have shown some real ambition this summer, following the appointment of former England boss Steve McClaren. The aforementioned
Diego has since signed and if he can reproduce the kind of form he showed for Bundesliga rivals Werder Bremen, he could lead the club to big things. Highly-rated Palermo defender Simon Kjaer also signed despite interest from several big-name English clubs.
So the initial disappointment of missing out on his dream move shouldn’t take too much longer to get over, especially if Wolfsburg hit the heights that are expected of them this term.
