Edina Gallovits-Hall defeats Jamie Hampton in first round of Family Circle Cup
Romanian tennis player Edina Gallovits-Hall scored a tight victory over American local player and wild card Jamie Hampton in the first round of this year’s Family Circle Cup, defeating her opponent 7-6(1), 7-5. The match was an extremely close one despite
the straight-sets win, and it took Gallovits-Hall a little over an hour and forty-seven minutes to defeat her opponent.
World Number 105 Edina Gallovits-Hall, who lives in Atlanta, USA, is currently on the verge of breaking into the Top 100 on the Women’s Tennis Association rankings. She is 26 years old, and has been playing tennis in a professional capacity since 1999. Gallovits-Hall
has been on the WTA Tour for over ten years, and has not yet won a career title. This is the first match that the Romanian player has won in 2011.
Jamie Hampton, on the other hand, is one of the younger players on Tour at the age of 21. She is currently ranked World Number 116, and has been playing professional tennis for less than two years. Considering this fact, her current position on the rankings
is actually quite impressive. She is right-handed, and has played a total of seventeen matches prior to this tournament in 2011. She won ten of these meetings and lost seven of them.
Gallovits-Hall surprised spectators by winning the match, since she has been playing unimpressive tennis for some months now. The match was a very close one, with Gallovits-Hall and Hampton scoring one ace apiece. Gallovits-Hall, however, played a more careful
game and avoided any double faults whereas Hampton fumbled to commit seven such errors. Gallovits-Hall defended herself against eight of eleven break points, while managing to convert four of nine opportunities against her American opponent.
Edina Gallovits-Hall won the match 7-6(1), 7-5 after winning 53 per cent of the total points in the two sets. This was the first meeting between the two players. The Romanian player will be playing against seventh seed Nadia Petrova of Russia in the second
round of the 2011 Family Circle Cup.
