Edina Gallovits battle past Donna Vekic 2-6, 6-4, 6-0
27-year-old, Edina Gallovits battles past Donna Vekic in the qualifying round of the US Open in New York. The Croatian native defeated her rival by 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.
In the initial set, both players proved to be tough competition against one another and successfully held their serves to take off the contest. However, the 16-year-old exhibited her excellent run of form and stepped forward to
maintain her lead in the set from the start. She successfully wrapped up the set with a 6-2 score line.
In the second set, the right-handed Romanian picked a slow start like before. Vekic captured the opportunity and pocketed the initial two games in the set. However, as the game kicked forward, the right–handed Romanian levelled
the scores to 4-all and subsequently nailed a crucial break point to claim the set with a 6-4 score.
In the decisive set, Vekic was unable to protect her initial serve. Her performance considerably declined and she was unable to secure a single game in the entire set. The world number 135 quickly grabbed the opportunity and effortlessly
marked her 6-0 win.
Vekic double faulted nine times at the critical moments in the match, and smashed one ace against her rival. She had low first serve percentage of 41. On the other hand, Gallovits has a moderate first serve percentage of 61, and
she fired two aces and double faulted thrice.
Lesia Tsurenko defeats Irena Pavlovic 6-2, 6-7(7), 6-2
Ukrainian tennis professional Lesia Tsurenko plonks Irena Pavlovic in the qualifying round on the hard courts of the Flushing Meadows later that day. Tsurenko defeated her rival by 6-2, 6-7(7), 6-2.
The contest kicked forward at a relatively slower pace as both the players were unable to maintain their initial serves. The former world number 94 finally got into the lead at 3-2. Pavlovic struggled hard to upset her opponent
but she seemed helpless in front of her rivals serves. She miserably lost the set by 2-6.
The following set exhibited similar format, this time the French women gave her Ukrainian opponent tough competition. She equalized the scores four times in the set and with no one breaking into the lead, the round ended in a tiebreaker.
Pavlovic finally claimed the set with her 7(7)-6 win in the tie-break.
In the third set, the right-hander Frenchwoman lost her confidence and was unable to withstand the pressure. She pounced forward and showed some resistance bringing the scores to 2-all at the start. Pavlovic’s pace died down and
she lost the set to the Ukrainian with 2-6.
Tsurenko fired five aces against her French opponent and double faulted eight times in the match. She had a moderate first serve percentage of 60. On the other hand, Pavlovic had a better first serve percentage of 68. She only
bombarded four aces and double faulted six times in the entire match.
