Edinborough / Edinburgh?

was brousing google. since when did Edinborough or Edinburgh get a name change ? when i lived in Scotland there was only way to spell it

you must remember that Google is an american company and as with all americans they cant spell or pronounce Scottish words..........did ya no ken that

Edinburgh remains the capital of Scotland.

There are other places in the world with "Edinburgh" in their names - usually because the original settlers came from Edinburgh.

But there are other places, completely unconnected to Scotland with similar names. For example, as I recall, in Minnesota, there is a place called "Edinborough" .

I suppose it depends whether you are browsing or brousing; in that anything that appears on the internet isn't necessarily fact.

Edinburgh is and has only ever had one spelling.

But people make mistakes. We, for example, have had people find us searching for Bed & Breakfast combined with

Edimbourg, Edinburg, Edingburgh, Edimburg, Edimburgo, Edinbrugh, Edimburgh, Edinbourgh, and...just 4 times out of over 20,000 visits Edinborough!!

The suffix 'burgh' is Scottish equivalent of 'bourough' in English.  So some people mistakenly spell it Edinborough because it's pronounced the same way and that's how English towns (e.g. Middlesborough) spell it.  It's definitely Edinburgh.

Except of course to the council, whose logo calls the place Edinbvrgh for some reason.  Probably because they think it looks like a historic rune or something stupid like that.

How did they spell it in Scotland?  I have only ever known it spelled as Edinburgh.  There is an Edinborough Park in Minnisota and Edinborough at the park in Durham, N.C.  The first time "Edinburgh" appears in the record in 1153 AD during David's reign.  It's been spelled that way ever since.  Prior to that, it had a Celtic name, Donegal or something like that.
