Me and my mum are going to Edinburgh for a few days, 15th-18th July, over the summer. What is there to do? We live in England so I imagine the highstreet shops will be similar but are there any areas that have good 'unique' shops or are there events etc on?

  2. the shops are similar, boring bland c**p designer rubbish, but if you feel inclined, check out some of the offbeat places, armstrongs do funky vintage clothes, theres a harvey nicks but i wouldnt be caught dead in it,its overpriced "branded"rubbish and very expensive, electric cabaret is good for punk stuff and cockburn st has a few shops which sell nice stuff which is not geared towards wag types and label freaks, plenty to do,just walk round the city, theres a lot of nice walks, water of leith, arthurs seat, old town, meadows etc, great places to eat too, everything from vegetarian to indian, spanish, italian, thai and trad scottish of course,if you feel inclined check out some of the galleries and museums, once you get off the "tourist"trail theres some nice interesting areas too see, duddingston(nature reserve)leith(harbour and port)newhaven(fishing village),there are also ope top tour buses which take you round the main part of city with tour guide etc

In terms of shopping, being the capital city, all the high street names are here in force. Don't know where you are from or the depth of your pockets, but there is now a Harvey Nicholls in Edinburgh to at least look around! Also a John Lewis and a famous old department store called Jenners with balconies over looking a central area from four or five floors up.

The Royal Mile and that area has all the tourist stuff you could possibly want from Ginger hair edged tartan hats to kilt design towels! Victoria Street nearby and the grassmarket has a few individual shops such as a Christmas shop, an old-fashioned cheese shop (smelly when its hot!), a fossil shop and independent clothes shops.

The High Street (Royal Mile) will have some stalls and there will be street performers during the day though its August before the full festival gets going.

  6. There are loads of places to visit in Edinburgh, the castle in particular.  In terms of shops if you can make your way to a place called Livingston which is outside of Edinburgh there is a fantastic designer outlet.  There is Karen Millan, Armani, Calvin Klein, Next, Whittards of Chelsea, Tucci (with lots of half price Radley bags/purses) to name but a few.  Also in the same area is TK Max, River Island, Dorothy Perkins etc.  There are lots of places to eat and you can spend a whole day shopping there.  I love Edinburgh and go on an almost monthly basis.  We stay at the Norton House Hotel which I would highly recommend.  Enjoy yourselves and take plenty of money
