Uruguay beat Republic of Ireland 3-2 in an international friendly at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday evening.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Republic-of-Ireland-c2987 manager Giovanni Trapattoni made as many as eight changes to his starting line-up from the 2-1 win against Macedonia recently. Only Keiren Westwood, Kevin Foley and Darren O’Dea retained their places. Wigan Athletic midfielder, James
McCarthy was handed his first international start, while Shane Long started as a lone striker in a 4-5-1 formation.
Uruguay fielded a strong starting line-up with in-form strikers Diego Forlan and Edinson Cavani leading the line in a 4-4-2 setup.
The game took off in a lively fashion, as both teams were looking to make early impression. Uruguay had a fantastic scoring opportunity in the 7th minute, Forlan played a superb defence splitting pass to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Abel-Hernández-c3432, who struck his shot miles
over the bar from close range.
Minutes later, the visitors had a huge let-off when Keith Fahey’s routine shot was fumbled by Uruguayan goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Muslera-c13690 but luckily for him the ball looped into the roof of the net.
Uruguay opened the scoring in the 11th minute, when Forlan’s free kick took a huge deflection off Fahey and fell into the path of skipper Diego Lugano, who calmly slotted the ball into the net to make it 1-0 for La Celeste.
Just three minutes later, the hosts managed to equalise after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liam-Lawrence-c22236 made a superb run from the right before sending a pin-point cross for Shane Long to bury his header into the net to make it 1-1.
The game was played at frantic pace, as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Maxi-Pereira-c25004 made a wonderful run from the right wing before laying the ball for Cavani, who curled a brilliant shot into the net to make it 2-1.
The visitors dominated the possession and had a complete control over the game. Several clear-cut goal scoring opportunities went in vain, but the visitors managed to double their lead moments before the half time whistle.
Pereira made another blistering run from the right wing before playing it to Hernandez, whose left footed effort went into the top corner of the goal to make it 3-1 for Uruguay.
Immediately after the resumption of second half, Andy Keogh was hacked inside the penalty area by Martin Caceres and the referee had little option but point to the spot. Fahey stepped up to take the penalty and calmly slotted home to make it 2-3.
Sanity returned to proceedings after the goal as the game dried up for major portion of the second half. Both teams came close of scoring in the later stages of the game but the visitors held their nerves to complete a tensed victory.
