Edinson Volquez’ economical pitches helps Cincinnati Reds defeat Chicago Cubs, 7-5: MLB Update
Cincinnati Reds’ starter Edinson Volquez was outstanding with the ball as he pitched six solid innings and had nine strike-outs in the club’s 7-5 victory against the Chicago Cubs at Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, on May 17.
Volquez permitted three runs on three hits including three earned runs. He gave away only one walk and one home run to the Cubs. Speaking to reporters, Volquez said, “I didn't see what happened. Dusty told me to swing at the first pitch. That's what I did.
I didn't see what happened after that.”
The Cubs opened their scoring account in the first inning by adding three runs. Carlos Pena struck a three-run homer off the left-centre field position against Volquez. It was considered as the fifth homer for Pena in the current season. The Cubs were on
top at the end of first inning with 3-0 lead. The second and third inning passed away score-less for both sides.
The Reds broke their fans’ silence in the fourth inning when they scored three runs in it. Ramon Hernandez walked on the loaded bases with two outs while the third baseman Scott Rolen doubled off the right field to complete a three-run campaign. The game
was levelled with 3-all at the end of fourth inning.
No score was added in the fifth and sixth inning as the pitchers were dominating. The Cubs went ahead with 4-3 when Tony Campana hit an RBI single off the left-centre field. The eighth inning was full of score for both sides as the Cubs added one run while
the Reds posted four runs to clinch a game.
Ramirez singled on the sacrifice bunt of Starlin Castro to raise the Cubs’ momentum a little bit. On the other hand, the Reds stepped on the gas and scored their all runs on the relieving errors of Kerry Wood. All the batters contributed equally as Brandon
Phillips walked; Chris Heisey hit an RBI single and Paul Janish made his single on the drive of Joey Votto, who went 1-for-4 with the bat. The score-card moved to 7-5 at the end of eighth inning.
In the ninth inning, there was no score from either side. The Cubs’ starter Matt Garza was a little bit shaky as he permitted three runs on five hits in six inning pitches.
