Edmonton Oilers keep Jordan Eberle on team with six-year, $36 million contract extension -NHL Update
Working to kill of any possible rumours of Jordan Eberle not wanting to stay with the Edmonton team, the Oilers announced the signing of the 22-year-old to a six-year, $36 million contract, which will keep him well through the 2018-2019 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season.
The announcement was made official by the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday, August 30, 2012.
"Obviously I'm pretty excited," Eberle said on a conference call. "With Taylor getting his done last week, I was pretty anxious. I'm happy to be an Oiler ... and I think with the direction the team's going it's pretty obvious that there's a lot of excitement level around Edmonton and throughout our locker room.”
At the moment, Eberle still has one year remaining on his three-year, entry-level contract which is worth a total of $2.625 million, giving him a cool $1.158,333 million per year including all the potential and signing bonuses.
This new contract extension will now be giving him $6 million a year, much more than he made in the past and enough to concentrate on working fully for the improvement of his team.
The signing came after Edmonton Oilers signed on 2010 NHL Entry Draft top pick, Taylor Hall, to a lengthy contract as well, something which the team terms to be crucial to the club’s performance in the future.
"They're a huge part of us going forward," General Manager, Steve Tambellini, said. "I think everybody recognizes that. We're trying to make sure we solidify the core of this team for some time. … To have Jordan and Taylor both locked in for some time with the Oilers feels pretty good."
Drafted as the 22nd overall by Edmonton back in round-one of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Eberle has continued to show excellence in his performance with 43 points (18 goals, 25 assists) in his first season and 76 points (34 goals, 42 assists) in the second.
In total, Jordan Eberle has played 147 games and holds 119 points, consisting of 52 goals and 67 assists and 32 minutes in penalty time.
Next season is one that Edmonton Oilers are looking forward to and keeping their team together is definitely a good sign.
