Edmonton Oilers re-sign Taylor Chorney and Ryan O’Marra to one-year contracts –NHL offseason Update
Edmonton Oilers re-signed defenseman, Taylor Chorney, and centre player, Ryan O’Marra, to one-year contracts on Friday, July 15, announced by the Western Conference's National Hockey League (NHL) franchise.
Both players are 24 years old and will be entering their consecutive seasons with Edmonton Oilers, a team which selected them both during the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
O’Marra, hailing from Tokyo, Japan, was picked as the 15th overall pick in round-one of the 2005 draft by New York Islanders, but never played with his original team.
He has played two seasons with Edmonton so far and a total of 24 games with them in the major league.
Before joining Edmonton, O’Marra played for their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate club, Springfield Falcons, and continued to play with them after playing only three regular season games with Oilers during the 2009-2010 season, in which he picked
up one assist.
Last season, Ryan O’Marra played in 21 games for a career high in the NHL and scored five points, a goal and 4 assists, and finished off with a plus-minus rating of -2.
Chorney on the other hand, hails from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, and was a 36th overall in round-two of the 2005 entry draft by Edmonton.
The 24-year-old has played three consecutive seasons with Edmonton Oilers, but has not played a full 82-game season as of yet. He played two games during the 2008-2009 season, and 42 games the following season in which he registered three assists.
Last season, Chorney participated in 12 matchups and recorded a season high of four points (1 goal, 3 assists). The 6-foot, 193-pound defenseman also played with Springfield Falcons for two seasons.
Both players seem to have the potential to become strong NHL players, which ultimately was the reason to signing them back onto the team.
According to the Edmonton management, they have signed on the players in order to give them another chance at excelling and showing their performance, which so far, has not been as impressive as expected.
The next season which starts in October, will be extremely crucial for both as they hope to make a stand in the league and promote themselves to the hockey world.
