Edmonton Oilers recall Yann Danis following Nikolai Khabibulin Groin Injury -NHL Update
Edmonton is certainly not where they want to be at the moment as they sit at number 14 in the Western Conference, but it did not get any better after their 5-2 loss against Vancouver Canucks as veteran goalie, Nikolai Khabibulin, was reported to have suffered
a groin injury.
Khabibulin went out right during the second period after he felt a sharp pain in the groin area, which would later on become a reason for him to miss at the very minimum a week or even more depending on his condition.
Backup goalie, Devan Dubnyk, took over from there as Khabibulin left the arena.
“It’s not too bad, I felt it early in the game, about two or three minutes in,” Khabibulin said. “I kept playing and in the intermission, I went to the trainers and told them, and they decided to pull me out.”
In order to fill the gap and to backup Dubnyk, the Edmonton Oilers recalled goalie, Yann Danis, from their minor league affiliate club in the American Hockey League (AHL) on Monday, February 20, 2012.
“For goalies, groins are delicate, but it doesn’t feel too bad,” Khabibulin added. “I’ve had groin injuries in the past, but this one doesn’t feel too bad. I can’t really remember a particular play that caused it. It just kind of showed up. I’ll take a few
days off the ice and hopefully I won’t miss too much time.”
Khabibulin is a 39-year-old veteran goalie and has been an integral part for the Oilers club for the past three seasons, including the current one.
He was drafted as the 204th overall pick during round-nine of the 1992 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by the former Winnipeg Jets and is currently playing in his 16th major league season.
Khabibulin boasts a 34 games played record in which he has 12 wins, 16 losses and five matches which headed into overtime with a .914 saves percentage along with 2.60 goals against average.
Danis, who will be playing backup to Dubnyk, is one of the leading goalies in the minor league and was selected to be a part of the 2012 AHL All-Star Game. He has appeared in 49 major league games with various teams such as Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders
and New Jersey Devils.
