Edmonton Oilers score three straight on Roberto Luongo to slide past Vancouver Canucks 3-2-NHL Update
Edmonton reassured the league that despite being a young and inexperienced team, they could still take down the National Hockey League (NHL) giants in a matter of minutes as the Oilers slide past the 2011 Stanley Cup finalists, Vancouver Canucks, 3-2, Tuesday
night at the sold-out Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
"We looked at this game as a statement game", Edmonton’s second year player, Taylor Hall said. "These are the games that good teams win, the games that really matter in the standings at the end of the year. These are the games that, if we are the team that
we think we are, that we have to win".
The Oilers faced the Canucks in their third matchup of the 2011-2012 regular season and lost in a close, 4-3, matchup, giving them more of a reason to make a comeback and take some revenge for their second straight victory which started against the New York
Rangers on Saturday.
The home team did not need any goals in the first period to win the match, but it was their back-to-back scoring in the second which actually played out well for them.
Jordan Eberle, Shawn Horcoff and Taylor Hall scored three straight within the first seven minutes of the second period on Vancouver’s veteran goalie, Roberto Luongo, which ultimately became the factor in him being ejected from the game and replaced by backup
goaltender, Cory Schneider.
"It was a frustrating night for me", Luongo said. "I felt I was moving well and seeing the puck well in the first period and then in a five-minute span they got three quick ones and that was all she wrote".
Cody Hodgson scored the first goal for Vancouver nearly five minutes after Hall’s second of the season while Alex Burrows potted his third nearly midway through the first but it was not enough to capture the match or even level it, despite having more than
double the attempts on net as compared to Edmonton.
Edmonton Oilers play one more home game against Washington Capitals on Thursday before heading off to Colorado to face the Avalanche. Vancouver will return home for October’s final two matchups against St. Louis Blues on Wednesday and Capitals on Saturday.
