Edmonton Oilers stun Chicago Blackhawks with wild 9-2 victory -NHL Match Update
Top 2010 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft pick, Taylor Hall, got his first hat trick of the season while the top 2011 draft pick, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, picked up a season high of five points, all assists, to lead the Edmonton Oilers over the veteran
Chicago Blackhawks team with a wild, 9-2, victory, Saturday night, at the sold-out Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The home crowd did not have a chance to sit down in their seats throughout the 60 minute contest, which was without a doubt, one of the wildest in the 2011-2012 regular season thus far, and will have both of rookies remembering it in upcoming days.
Edmonton goalie, Nikolai Khabibulin, had another wonderful performance to boost the rookie team by blocking 34 of 36 shots while the Blackhawks were busy with scrambling to change goalies but to no use.
Winning this match was certainly one which gives Edmonton’s young team the confidence they need to make it big this season, which is certainly at the top of their to-do list.
"The big thing for us was coming back to a defensive commitment for the game," Edmonton Oilers head coach, Tom Renney, said. "The guys were all in tonight."
Veteran goalie, Ray Emery, was pulled out by the Blackhawks after be let seven attempts go through him on 27 attempts, while Corey Crawford, the back-up, did not do any better by falling short on two of five shots.
"We're all (angry)," Chicago captain, Jonathan Toews, said. "We are all embarrassed. At the same time, we are going to stick together and remain a team and not point the finger at one guy or another. We are going to have to find a way to move on. We know
our effort has to be way better. The way we played these last two nights was completely unacceptable."
Ales Hemsky, Ryan Jones, Ryan Smyth, Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle potted five goals in the first period alone, while Patrick Sharp put in the only Chicago goal after Hemsky.
Tom Gilbert and Taylor Hall came out with two more in the second followed by a minor interference by Chicago’s Dave Bolland for their second and last and Shawn Horcoff for another Oilers goal, all on power plays.
Hall scored the game’s last nearly midway through the third to secure an already locked match.
