Edmonton Oilers win second game in a row 4-1 against the Montreal Canadiens
One of the interesting games of Thursday was hosted by the Edmonton Oilers at the Rexall Place. The game saw the home team up against the Montreal Canadiens. A win for the Oilers would be a consolation as they are out of contention for a play-off spot while
Canadiens needed a win to strengthen their position in the play-off cut.
The game was pretty much even at the end of the first two periods with the scores also level on 1-1. However, Oilers stepped up their game and scored thrice in the final period to emerge as 4-1 winners of the game in the end. Nikolai Khabibulin, goal keeper
of the Oilers was named the star of the game as he made 36 saves.
A smooth start to the game was observed by both teams with the puck going up and down the ice with a few shots by both teams. Some decent plays were observed by both teams and there some decent pieces of play were observed by both teams.
The first goal was expected to be scored soon given the smoothness and flow in each teams play. Oilers were the first to benefit from this as they scored through Ales Hemsky from a quick fired shot in the 9th minute to get into the lead. Both
teams continued to pile pressure and there were several scoring chances for both sides but they failed to find the back of the net.
The period ended with no further goals scored and the Oilers leading 1-0 as the teams went into the break. During the course period, Oilers made 11 goal attempts while the Canadiens made 8 goal attempts.
The second period saw the Canadiens come out strong and determined to score. They put in quite a bit of hard work which resulted in them starting to come across scoring chances right from the start. The away side was rewarded for this with a goal in the
5th minute scored by Jeff Halpern from a well placed flick shot.
The period thereafter was still dominated by the Canadiens as they bombarded shots on goal every now and then. Oilers had a few chances of their own but they too couldn’t find the back of the net. Their passing and shooting were both superb but the only
thing that both teams lacked were in the department of offence.
The period saw Canadiens making 17 goal attempts while the Oilers made 8 goal attempts as the scores were level on 1-1 at the end.
The final 20 minutes of play were pretty much even but the Oilers successfully score three goals to win the game in the end. The first goal was scored in the 4th minute by Jordan Eberle while the second was scored by Ryan Jones in the next minute
to double their lead.
Canadiens gave it all they had in pursue to level the scores but they were unsuccessful in doing so. The period saw its final goal scored in favour of the Oilers once again. Ales Hemsky scored his second of the night and final goal of the period in the final
period as the Oiler won the game 4-1.
During the final 20 minutes of play Oilers managed to come up with 9 goal attempts while the Canadiens made 12 goal attempts but still couldn’t find the back of the net.
