Edmonton Oilers wins 2-1 against the Nashville Predators after shootout
The Edmonton Oilers, last positioned team in the Western Conference played host to the Nashville Predators in another important game of Tuesday.
The Predators needed to win the game as a loss in any regulation or overtime would result in them losing the play-off spot.
Oilers, on the other hand, were hopeful of decent performance on home ice which is something they haven’t been able to do so far in the season.
Both the teams scored a goal apiece during the first period and this is how it remained through the regulation time.
Though the Predators were more productive in terms of goal attempts during the first two periods, they couldn’t capitalise from these chances and didn’t score any goals.
The regulation time ended with the scores level on 1-1. The game went into overtime but no goals were scored in overtime as well. However, the Oilers managed to win the game 2-1 after shootout.
Martin Gerber was named the star of the game for his superb performance that saw him making 34 goal attempts during the game.
Predators absolutely exploded at the start of the game and all they knew at the start was to attack.
They didn’t let the Oilers settle down with some excellent passing and play-making. They didn’t give the opposing team any space to work their way past the defence.
With the strong offensively play, a goal was surely on the way the question was when it would be scored. It took some time but the Predators took the lead with Blake Geoffrion scoring from a powerful strike in the 13th minute.
However, this lead didn’t last long as the Oilers managed to draw level with Jim Vandermeer scoring through a brilliant quick fired shot in the very next minute.
The remaining part of the period saw the Predators continuingly firing shots on goal with Oilers making a few shots on goal.
No further goals were scored as the period ended with the scores level on 1-1. During the period, the Oilers made 7 goal attempts while the Predators made 18 goal attempts.
The second period saw the Predators dominating the game once again as they were more productive in terms of goal attempts. Coupled with this was another fact that the defence of the Predators was very good.
The defence restricted the Oilers to half their shots on goal and most of the shots that the Oilers made were from long range.
The period ended with the scores still level on 1-1 with the Oilers making six goal attempts while the Predators made 12 goal attempts.
The final period of the game against saw change in momentum as the Oilers emerged the stronger of the two teams. During the course of the period, the Oilers made 11 goal attempts while the Predators made 4 goal attempts.
No goals were scored during the period as the game ended with the scores level on 1-1.
Resultantly, the game went into overtime but no goals were score in overtime as well.
However, the Oilers emerged as 2-1 winners of the game after shootout.
