Edmonton set to boost golf in Canada

The Royal Mayfair Golf & Country Club, Edmonton, which staged the 2007 CN Canadian Women’s Open, is reportedly going to host the prestigious tournament once again, in the 2013 season.
Edmonton has been one of best golfing spots in Canada for years, and most of the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) stars love to play here because of a unique look and feel of its most amazing course
— the Royal Mayfair Golf & Country Club.
Edmonton has the honour of staging two editions of the CN Canadian Women’s open. The first edition of the LPGA tournament was held in 1996 while the second in 2007. The crowd of Edmonton has always been crazy
about golf — something that prompted the Canadian golf officials to pay attention to the course and they eventually decided to host the event in Edmonton next year.
Golf Canada Executive Director and CEO Scott Simmons recently announced the decision to stage the Canadian Open in Edmonton. Simmons said that the officials are very excited to see Edmonton hosting the prestigious
tournament once again, and it is sure to boost the image of golf all across Canadian — not just in certain cities of the country.
“In partnership with CN, we are very pleased to confirm that the CN Canadian Women's Open will return to Royal Mayfair Golf Club in 2013,” Simmons announced at a gathering in Edmonton.
The Golf Canada Executive Director went on to say that due to the successful hosting of the tournament in the 2007, fans and players had been waiting for a chance to enjoy golfing experience at Royal Mayfair
Golf Club once again. Now that the decision has been made, it is expected that players will take part in the coming event with more enthusiasm and interest.
The 2007 edition of the CN Canadian Women’s Open saw a nerve-jangling battle at Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Lorena Ochoa of Mexico won the event by three strokes. Ochoa, who has retired from professional golf
now, had expressed her feelings about the course, saying she liked playing at Royal Mayfair Golf Club — mainly because of the amazing crowd and favourable weather conditions.
On the other hand, English Laura Davies also has some bright memories about Edmonton. Laura, a prominent player on the LET (Ladies European Tour) grabbed a title at the CN Canadian Women’s Open on the same
the course in 1996.
With the tournament slated to be played at Edmonton next year, Davies must be recalling her attention-grabbing victory back in 1996.
George Dawson, President of Royal Mayfair Golf Club, said that everyone is happy to hear the news that the city, capital of Alberta, is going to give Edmonton natives a chance to see the tournament live.
“On behalf of the Board of Governors, Membership, staff and management, we are thrilled to be named host of the 2013 CN Canadian Women's Open.  We look forward to welcoming the many golf enthusiasts from within
our city and surrounding communities. We are equally excited about partnering with CN, Golf Canada, and the LPGA Tour as we look to raise funds for local children's charities,” Dawson said.
Moreover, Claude Mongeau, President and Chief Executive Officer of CN also expressed his feelings about the move, saying staging a tournament like CN Canadian Women’s Open in Edmonton will support the sport
in the country and lure young talent.
