Edner Cherry strengthens win streak by collecting win over Juan Carlos Martinez – Boxing News
Edner Cherry, the former WBC United States (USNBC) lightweight champion, collected a unanimous win and outscored the Mexican Juan Carlos Martinez, the former World Boxing Foundation All Americas lightweight champion, by just an inch in a 10-round bout held
on April 14, 2012.
The above duo headlined the Saturday night event which was jointly organised and promoted by Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing and Dominic Pesoli of 8 Count Production. The event was co-headlined by the non-title six-round clash between Adrian Granados and
Ramon Guevara.
The ring for the event was stretched at Cicero Stadium situated in Cicero, Illinois, United States and was televised live on Telefutura. Edner, was entering in his career’s 39th bout and had a bit upper hand over his Mexican opponent Juan.
Cherry, also known as ‘The Cherry Bomb’, boasted 29 wins with 16 of them via knockout. The 29-year-old Bahamian pugilist was on a seven-bout win streak since his last loss to Timothy Bradley.
Juan, on the other hand, was in his career’s 34th bout and exhibited just 19 wins with only seven via knockout. The 30-year-old Mexican proud was coming from a technical fourth-round knockout loss to Miguel Angel Garcia, the bout in which he also lost the
golden chance to grab the NABF featherweight gold.
Edner possessed a clear upper hand even before the bout started. He had a decent win ratio as compared to Juan; a sensible rather bit intimidating knockout proficiency, the height advantage, and above all the long motivating win streak.
In addition to the above, things got more interesting when the bout started and Edner overwhelmed Juan by his impressive agility, footwork and timely well-targeted right-left combinations.
From the very first second, it was Cherry who led the pace of the battle and Juan just strived hard to keep on with his pace. From a safe distance Edner threw powerful jabs and rattled Juan by his raw powered punches.
But this did not continue for long as with fatigue wearing Edner out, Juan grasped the advantage and started pounding Cherry. It was the last three-four rounds that Juan was able to connect as many jabs possible eventually rallying on all the three cards.
During the whole bout, most of the time, both pugilists exhibited a defensive stance and none tried hard to nail the other one via KO. Cherry, who collected 97-93, 99-91, and 95-95, now has 30 wins in his account and Juan has tarnished his resume further
by collecting his career’s 14th bout.
