Edner Cherry takes on Juan Carlos Martinez in non-title 10-round bout – Boxing news
Edner Cherry, the former NABF lightweight champion, will take on the Mexican proud Juan Carlos Martinez, the former number one contender for the NABF featherweight gold, in a 10-round bout scheduled on April 14, 2012.
The ring for the bout will be stretched at Cicero Stadium situated in Cicero, Illinois, United States and the event is being organised and promoted by the duo of Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing and Dominic Pesoli of 8 Count Productions.
The above duo will headline the event whereas the non-title eight-round bout between Lamar Russ and Jose Alonzo will co-headline the Saturday night show which will be televised live by TeleFutura.
Edner, 29, has been in a total 38 bouts and has a clear upper hand over Juan as far as the experience and the win ratio is concerned. Cherry, also known as the ‘Cherry Bomb’, has pinned 29 of his total opponents and nailed 16 of them via knockout.
The Bahamian proud collected his career’s last loss from Timothy Bradley and since then is on a six-bout win streak. In his last bout, Edner successfully collected an eight-round unanimous win in his favour against Guillermo Sanchez.
His Saturday night opponent, Juan, has been in a total 33 bouts. He has tarnished his resume by 13 losses and has collected 19 wins, seven of them by knockout. One important thing that gives Carlos a bit upper hand over Edner is the names he has recently
fought.
Carlos collected a technical knock out loss from Miguel Angel Garcia and before that took on Bernabe Concepcion, Ernesto Morales, Juan Carlos Burgos, Jose Andres Hernandez, and others. Though he was not able to nail Juan Carlos Burgos yet above names are
considered respectable in the division.
Cherry, on the other hand, has fought brawlers of a bit low-calibre. Even with this drawback, Edner has the height, home crowd, win, and knockout proficiency advantages that will certainly help him in grabbing an emphatic win if used optimally.
In a recent interview, while sharing his thoughts about the last bout with Sanchez, Edner commented, “He caught me with a solid punch in the first round. I wasn’t so much hurt as surprised but got up and went right back to work.”
Cherry continued and said, “I’m glad to be back in the ring so quickly, I had been off for a while before the Sanchez fight and needed to shake off some ring rust. Southpaws are always more difficult so I’m glad that I’m facing an orthodox fighter like myself
this time.”
The bout is definitely going to be a tough one since both men have almost equal upper hand over each other in fact the odds are only slightly in favour of Edner. Juan, if capitalises his experience carefully might get an emphatic win but for Cherry the bout
is a golden chance to prove that he can nail a better man.
