Edouard Roger-Vasselin, Matthias Bachinger win their first qualifiers – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
Edouard Roger-Vasselin beats Alexander Kudryavtsev 6-2 Ret’d
Top seed, Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France, moved to the second round of the qualifying draw, after his opponent, Alexander Kudryavtsev, retired from the first match at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami on Monday. Roger-Vasselin
was leading 6-2, when Kudryavtsev quit the match.
Kudryavtsev made a good start, breaking the French in the very first game of the match. However, the Russian managed to win only one of the following seven games, dropping his serve three times and losing it 2-6.
Ranked 156th in the world, Kudryavtsev retired from the match after losing the first set due to some medical problem.
Roger-Vasselin neither delivered any ace nor committed any double fault. On the other hand, Kudryavtsev hit a couple of double faults. The Russian was unable to serve properly, winning just five of the 14 points on the first and
two of the seven points on the second deliveries. The contest lasted for just 26 minutes.
The 28-year-old, Roger-Vasselin, is slated to play James Ward of Great Britain in the second round. The Brit upset 24th seed, Andrey Golubev, in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the opener.
Matthias Bachinger defeats Ruben Bemelmans 6-4, 6-2
Matthias Bachinger of Germany overpowered Belgian Ruben Bemelmans in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 in the opening qualifier to join Roger-Vasselin in the second round. The fourth seed took only an hour and two minutes to rout Bemelmans.
Bachinger took an early advantage, as he snatched a break in the second game of the first set to grab a 2-0 lead. Though, he could not sustain it for long, levelling the score at 2-2. The German made another breakthrough in the
tenth game and secured it 6-4.
The Munich, Germany resident smacked a couple of aces but also delivered the same number of double faults. The 24-year-old outplayed Bemelmans with his accurate second returns, claiming 10 of the 15 points on them in the opener.
In the second set, there was no break in the first four games, as both players put on a fine serving display. However, Bachinger captured four in a row after that, striking twice to seal it 6-2.
The German had a low first serve percentage but he did not lose any point on them, pocketing all six. While, Bemelmans had problems with his second serve, delivering three double faults.
The right-hander will meet Rajeev Ram of USA in the second match of the qualifying draw. Ram ousted Mikhail Elgin in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in the first round.
