Edouard Roger-Vasselin downs Daniel Evans to reach quarters – Orange Open Guadeloupe 2012 CH
Fourth seed, Edouard Roger-Vasselin, stomped over the British contender, Daniel Evans, in straight sets at the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 on Thursday. He summed up a 6-3, 6-2 victory against the 21-year-old to charge into the quarter-finals at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event held in Le Gosier.
The French star ruled throughout the 68 minutes duel and outran Evans in straight sets. As a result, Roger-Vasselin high-spiritedly entered the final eight at the Guadeloupian hard courts.
Roger-Vasselin stormed into the Stade Lambert Lamby and cruised to a 3-0 lead after drawing the first blood in the second game. The French then plucked remaining serves after saving the only breakpoint he came across and pocketed the opener by winning six
games to three. He formulated a poor first serve share of 58 per cent as compared to Evans’ 75 percent but brilliantly clicked 14 out of 18 points on it.
The world number 89 kept momentum rolling into the following set and went on a four-game rampage before Evans could hold on. He then plucked successive serves without facing any breakpoint and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line. Roger-Vasselin jolted
down a better first serve share this time and amazingly availed 14 out of 19 points on it.
Next in queue for the fourth seed is the German challenger, Benjamin Becker, who devastated Pierre-Hugues Herbert with a bagel to set-up this meeting. He broke the French qualifier’s serve five times to formulate a 6-0, 6-2 score line in 64 minutes. Becker
also clobbered a better first serve share and magnificently clicked 22 out of 27 points on it.
The top seed, Olivier Rochus of Belgium, will join the French in the proceeding round. Rochus, who is ranked 52nd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, fended off early resistance to manifest a 7-6(7), 7-5 success against France’s
Josselin Ouanna. The Belgian failed to defend the only breakpoint he encountered but broke Ouanna’s serve twice to earn the glory. He committed equal number of double faults but clinched 37 out of 47 points on his higher first serve share to dominate throughout
the match.
