Edouard Roger-Vasselin prevails over Jimmy Wang in second round – Hall of Fame Championships 2011
World number 136 Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France dismissed Taiwanese, qualifier Jimmy Wang, ranked 491st in the world, in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 in the second round at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships
in Newport  on Wednesday. The match lasted for an hour and 30 minutes.
Roger-Vasselin and Wang broke each other on a number of occasions in the first set. Wang drew the first blood as he broke the French in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Roger-Vasselin bounced back immediately, breaking back
in the very next game and holding his serve in the fourth game to equalise the score at 2-2. The French broke again in the seventh game but failed to consolidate on it to level the score at 4-4. The French claimed the decisive break at 5-5 and served out the
set at 6-5.
The six feet and two inches tall fired 68 percent of the first serves but failed to hit any ace in the first set. Roger-Vasselin delivered three double faults in the opening set. The French claimed 71 percent of the first service
and 50 percent of the second service points. The right-handed did not allow his opponent to win any free points on serve as he returned brilliantly, bagging an incredible 44 percent of the first return points in the opening set. Roger-Vasselin converted three
of the seven break points he received on Wang’s serve and saved two of the four break points on his own serve in the first set.
In the second set, Roger-Vasselin took the lead straightaway as he broke Wang in the first game and consolidated on it to go ahead 2-0. The Taiwanese was not in a mood to surrender, breaking back in the sixth game and equalising
the score at 3-3. However, Roger-Vasselin inflicted the final blow as he broke Wang in the ninth game and captured the set 6-4.
The French delivered 64 percent of the first serves and a single ace in the second set. Roger-Vasselin bagged 56 percent of the first service points in the second set. The 27-year-old capitalised on two of the seven break point
opportunities he created on the Taiwanese’s serve and could not save the only break point he faced on his own serve in the second set.
Roger-Vasselin is slated to play eighth seed Tobias Kamke of Germany in the quarterfinals. The German defeated Donald Young of USA 7-6(3), 6-4 in the second round.
