Eduard Gutknecht enters third EBU title defence bout against Tony Averlant - Boxing news
Eduard Gutknecht, the incumbent EBU (European) light heavyweight champion, will defend his gold for the third consecutive time against the French Tony Averlant, the former EBU-EU (European Union) light heavyweight champion, in a 12-round skirmish on Saturday
March 31, 2012.
The event is being promoted by Sauerland Event’s Wilfried Sauerland and the ring for the epic show will be stretched at Sparkassen-Arena situated in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The show will be headlined by the championship bout between Arthur Abraham
and Piotr Wilczewski and the above light heavyweight bout will co-headline the night.
Eduard, 30, proudly ranks at number one position in Germany, his home country and has been in a total 24 bouts. The orthodox pugilist has lost only one bout to Robert Stieglitz, a bout in which he missed the golden chance of becoming the WBO super middleweight
champion.
Also known as Eddy, Eduard has collected just nine of his total 23 wins by knockout and is basically considered a resilient brawler. His Saturday night opponent, Tony, has also been in a total 24 bouts but has tarnished his resume more as compared to Eduard.
The 28-year-old Frenchman has won 17 bouts and just four of them by knockout. A bird’s eye view at the stats and resume of both men clearly proves that Eddy has a substantial upper hand over Tony.
Eddy has a greater win ratio and has collected more wins by knockout than the French number three belligerent Tony. In addition, Eduard has nailed much more experienced brawlers in his last five bouts as compared to Tony’s opponents who collected a draw
decision and four wins in his last five bouts against rookie-cadre pugilists.
Tony will face severe difficulty as he has not fought a 12-round bout since August 2011 and might get fatigued or exhausted in just the early rounds. Eduard, who collected an emphatic unanimous decision win over Vyacheslav Uzelkov in his last bout, while
commenting about his experience against Uzelkov said, “That was an important victory for me.”
The former WBO Inter-Continental super middleweight champion, Eddy continued and said, “I did exactly what my coach Mr Wegner asked of me. Now I am prepared for a tough fight against Averlant. I was ringside when he won the EU title against Artur Hein last
year. He impressed me, he is a good boxer and comes forward all the time. I will be prepared for him and defend my title.”
Tony and Eddy though have been in the same number of bouts yet the French needs to put up some unique game plan in order to collect a win. At the moment, Eddy has the odds clearly in his favour.
