Eduardo Schwank and Horacio Zeballos reach the quarter-final of the Seguros Bolivar Open
Another Argentine reaches the quarter-final of the Seguros Bolivar Open, as the fifth seed Eduardo Schwank beat his fellow compatriot, Juan Pablo Brzezicki in the second round at Barranquilla, Colombia. Schwank battled hard for three sets to take down his
opponent at 6-2, 7-6, 6-3.
24-year-old Schwank had a brilliant start to the contest and took an early advantage of his opponent’s sloppy start. After bagging the opener with ease, Schwank faced a valiant effort from Brzezicki in the second set.
Brzezicki served very well in the opener, reaching 71 percent accuracy, but could not restrain his rival to crack vital serve breaks. Schwank broke the opponent’s serve twice to rocket away to 6-2, getting one up in the contest.
The 28-year-old veteran regrouped in the next set to give a stiff resistance to Schwank. Brzezicki hung in throughout the second set, holding serve in every game and having a strict check over his error count. A routine game from both contestants took the
scores to 6-6, imposing a tie breaker round. The decider went on neck-to-neck as well, but some quick points from Brzezicki towards the end ensured the second set to his name at 7-6, forcing a third.
Brzezicki remained competitive in the third set, but Schwank was phenomenal with collecting crucial points. Two serve breaks each from both the contestants took the scores to 4-3, with Schwank leading. The Argentine accelerated his game to edge past Brzezicki,
finishing the match at 6-3 to reach the quarter-final of the Association of Tennis Professionals Challenger Tour at Barranquilla.
Schwank will meet his other compatriot, second seed Horacio Zeballos, in the round of eight on Friday night. Zeballos was victorious against the local boy, Carlos Salamanca, defeating him 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, in a two hour nine minutes thriller.
World Number 88, Zeballos, took hold of the opening set, using his powerful serve to perfection and striking two serve breaks. Two consecutive double faults from Salamanca in the ninth game gifted the first set to the Argentine at 6-3.
The Colombian turned the game around in the next set with some elegant cross-court strokes, breaking the opponent’s serve twice. Four double faults were conceded by the Argentine, wore him out, submitting the second set to his opponent at 3-6.
A nail biting third set was witnessed by the crowd at Barranquilla, as both men strained extremely hard to remain in the competition. No serve breaks from the two competitors took the third set into a decisive tie breaker. Zeballos was outstanding in the
decider and to the dismay of the local crowd, blew away Salamanca to win the matchup at 7-6.
