I was watching CNN and I saw an educated black man state "Colored People". I have seen negative responses to white persons whom call black people colored and was wondering what people think. Thanks!

FYI: I don't use the term, just asking your thoughts!!

  1. Should we all just be people, rather than White people or Black or whatever? Someone would whine about that too though.

I do know for certain that I am an American. I was born and raised here. My great-grandparents were from France. They were French and became French Americans. I am American. My grandfather was born in Pennsylvania. I was born in Michigan. That makes me a Michigander, NOT a Pennsylvanian. It's not rocket science! Not to some of us, anyway. If you weren't born in Africa and moved here, you are NOT African American. If you want to be that anal, we are all cave ites. Cavities? :)

  2. I need to know what the context was. If he was being sarcastic, trying to make a point, or talking about something that happened in the past, that would put a completely different spin on things.

Otherwise, as long as it's not intentionally derogatory, I can't be concerned with what people call the different races and nationalities. It changes too often; what was OK one day is derogatory the next. Who can keep up?

When I was in college, the "politically correct" term was "people of color." I heard a white colleague say "colored people." I mentioned it to him in a nice way and he explained that he got confused by all the different terminology and didn't realize that "people of color" wasn't the same as "colored people." How can you get mad about that. It really is confusing.

  3. Did he say colored people when he was talking about the NAACP?  The CP stands for colored people.

  4. As a member of the group that the term "colored people" excludes, I am not allowed to have or express any thoughts of my own on racial terminology.

  5. He is black so he can refer to black people in whatever term he feels comfortable.

    So says society

  6. Really, it's an isolated issue. One person referred to black people as colored, what are you going to do? That's his right. Overall the nation when addressing blacks as a whole do not address them as colored, that's the bigger picture.

I've had older people address me as colored, they weren't trying to be disrespectful, it's just what they know.

  7. The term "colored people" has evolved to mean any non-caucasian person.

  8. I think people are just way too touchy anymore. No, I don't think people should be racist or call racist names but since when is saying someone is coloured, or black, or native, or even white since when is that being racist? People have to be called something. An incident that happened to my sister, who is in no way racist at all, went like this. She asked a black lady if there is such a thing as black bandaids for people that have dark skin (she's always trying to think up something that hasn't been invented yet) and this woman got angry at her and reamed her out because my sister was being racist!!! That is pretty pathetic. I've got a native background. Call me an indian, I don't care it's what I am. Racism will end when people realize there is no difference between races except skin colour.

  9. I am sick and tired of blacks calling themselves African American.  My grandparents came from thier homeland and I don't call myself a European American.  Most blacks don't even know their own heritage, but love to make fun of the whites that live here!  They are racists.  We gave them rights in the 60s and they are still complaining about it.  I say, "Get over the race issue and be an American"!

Colored People is an old term that includes many different colors.  It is still used and is considered good form in my book.  Better that than African American!

  10. Who cares what African-Americans/black people/colored people call themselves?

    These are my thoughts:

  11. they should be called black not colored they are not the colour of the rainbow

  12. In the Uk, we say someone of colour, for anyone who is not white.  It is quite simply stating a fact.  Perhaps this man was speaking in that way rather than just about Black people.

  13. I think white is a color.
