I have been looking into a police department and I think they will offer me the job. I want to know what are policies like in other departments as far as setting up your shifts so you can take classes.

  1. It really depends on the department you work for. Some are very understanding and even give incentives for completing your education. Others are not as understanding when it comes to scheduling around class times. Remember that just about all departments will tell you that your work shift is your first priority (because they are paying you, of course).

If the department you may work for doesn't schedule around classes, you can always complete your education on-line. A lot of colleges are allowing their students to complete their classes on-line now.

  2. police academy

  3. Many good colleges are starting to put their police and criminal justice programs online to make this easy as more police are not seeking higher education.

When I say good college I am not talking about fly by night .com college. I am talking about state run schools.

Check out University Wisconsin Platteville they have a highly rated online college program.

  4. You might need to put your education on hold for a while.

Depending on where you are and the Department, you might have to attend their academy.  After that you have field training time.  Then possibly probationary solo time.  After all that, you might be best to ask your supervisor if you can be assigned to a particular shift (evenings or midnights) to continue your education.  This might work, as it would open day shift for some senior officer.

Pose that question during the interview process when they ask you if you have any questions.  It will show that you have thought about how the job will impact your life and it will show that you want to continue your education.

Until they hire you, continue school.

    Good luck.

  5. Taking classes, like going  to college, or taking police classes?

If you mean police classes they will schedule that for you.

If you mean going to college while working, that should be easy, since most new police officers work 1st shift, from midnight to 8 a.m., so you can attend college almost anytime.
