hi thanks for your help!! its much appreciated!

My cousin is 17 and lives in Dublin. He still has 1 year before he does his leaving certificate. He has done his junior cert and got 8 honours and 3 passes. He wants to come over here to live this year, and continue his education. What would he need to do, if he doesn't have his leaving cert yet? high school or college?? how can he get the equivalent of his leaving cert [ie. still have good grades despite not finishing education in Ireland]

  1. he would be better off going straight to college/uni, his qualifications are already high enough to gain entry to most.

  2. You need to contact the local education authority for the area that he will be living in, they will be able to provide you with all the information you need.

    go to

    http://www.dfes.gov.uk/localauthorities/...

and click on local authority address finder, from here you can access all LEA's websites

  3. The Junior Cert is NOT the equivalent of the GCSE, he won't be able to get into University on it.  If he wanted to attend a college, they would have to discuss it with the admissions department of the chosen college.

I've also posted an answer elsewhere, so you can put the information together from both of them.

In the UK school system, kids go into secondary school at the age of 11 and when they're 16 & in Year 11 they do their GCSEs.  Like the Irish sytem, kids in the UK can leave school at the age of 16 but GCSEs have a greater academic value then the Junior Cert.  The options after the GCSEs open up a lot more then at home, you can either remain where you are & do your A Levels (or find an alternative venue to do them, either another school or a college).  When they say college in the UK, they don't mean University, for want of a better description they're further education institutes, you don't have to study A Levels, there a number of alternative qualifications available.  I think this website might be able to explain your cousin's options better then I can.
