  1. The rules vary from state to state, BUT in Florida it would make more sense to major in Social Studies education. I had a friend who majored in History, got his certification, and was then not allowed to teach certain SS classes. True story- he was told he could not teach a Psychology/Sociology class because he was lacking a Geography credit that would enable him to be certified in SS instead of just History. So... since you can teach almost anything for 1 year without a certificate, they had him teach a GEOGRAPHY course instead! I swear, it is the truth.

Anyway, my degree was SS ed and I can literally teach ANY courses in the SS department- history, geography, sociology, psychology, anthropology, government/civics, cultures, economics.... It is just an idea to consider. With a certificate in SS, you might be more valuable to a principal because he can be more flexible with your course load.
