In an educational sense what are vouchers? Are they an attack on public institutions?

  2. They should not be considered an attack on public institutions.  Before urban areas with huge populations became a reality, children would go to the nearest school, a neighborhood school.   Parents liked that because the school became a center of community activity.  

    Today, if everyone tried to go to the closest school, some schools would fill up and some would be nearly empty.  And people became more aware of the importance of education in helping their children achieve as adults.  As they did, they began to notice the differences in schools and wanted choice for their child.  The government has tried to answer that desire with vouchers, permission to transfer to another school even if it's out of district..  Some people think it's the only way to be fair, but it is not feasible for every school district.   It's the same old problem of people choosing the same school and leaving other schools empty.  It sounds great, but is not completely practical.

    What we need to do is make every school as good as we can.  That's not an easy task either.  I don't think I need to tell you why.  The world is never going to be perfect.
