  1. Partially. Preparing for a career (not necessarily a specific job) is important. Living and functioning in a society is also a critical function. Learning to think critically is possibly the most important - and the most neglected.

  2. yeh, sure, children should be treated multi functionally.

  3. It's a student's choice whether they want a pre professional or vocational approach or whether they want their education to just teach them skills like thinking, analyzing, writing.

  4. I totally agree, and we as teachers also need to teach these kids how to KEEP a job in the future because, as a jr. high teacher, I don't see many of them ever being able to keep a job, especially the ones of the "gangsta" persuasion. I have kids in my class who can not take any direction from authourity and tell me if anyone tries to "make" them do anything they don't want to do, they will quit.....WTF? With some of these kids, it not what they know, but how they can deal with society.

  5. Sort of - the purpose of education is to teach a student to think and reason and communicate and calculate to be able to do SEVERAL jobs in the future, not just ONE!

  6. disagree. i mean, in the practical sense, yes. but if you think about the history of university education, kids born into wealth who would never have to work a day in their lives would have to be educated if for no other reason than to properly represent their families and be cultured and able to carry an intellectual conversation. it wasn't so they could go out into the corporate world. should trust fund babies go to school? absolutely!

  7. Disagree ....

The goal of education should be -principally- teaching learners how to learn.  The so-called "jobs" the learners take on in the future may or may not be relevant to the very subjects they are studying today.  In fact, many of the jobs 10-20 years from now aren't even conceived yet ... these jobs will evolve based on the wants, needs, and resourcefulness of individuals and groups across the globe.  And that is why the art and science of "learning" is the most critical task of educators and students.

Once a learner knows how s/he learns best, then the task of understanding and completing jobs is rather easy -and simplified.

Once a learner knows how s/he learns best, then the journey called life is also less troublesome, less intimidating, less overwhelming ... knowing how we learn and applying that "knowledge" across all dimensions of our life -from jobs to investments, to our daily consumption of products and selection of services- is the most precious gift any education can give ... because it truly keeps on giving long after the learner has left the school.
