Educational activities/crafts for kindergartners?

I am about to start working at the YMCA during the school year for the first time, and I am in charge of the whole kindergartners class. They don't get very much homework, if any, so its up to me to make almost like lesson plans for them that are fun but serve some sort of educational purpose. Does anyone have any ideas for me that are kindergarten friendly or any websites I can check out? Thanks so much!

Is this an after school program or a daytime program?

Kindergarten nowadays is not babysitting or entertaining. In Georgia, our Kindergarteners are giving up naps for extra study time! We give homework and all K level kids by the end of the year can identify all the letters and their sounds, tell placement such as first, second, third- and count back money and change to 30 cents. I do not know which state you are in, but go to the department of education website for your state and find the standards. Use these as your goal and find fun ways to get there.

Everything will depend on the tolerace of your students.

One great thing will always be making projects out of each letter. Be tactile and get their hands on things. My favorite is always the wedding of Q and U. Last year we even had a wedding cake donated!

Find out which school most of the kids attend and ask if you can visit or help out for a day- that will let you stay in touch with what they are doing. The teachers would love the extra help and parents would be appreciative of having kids finish up the work before coming home.
