my daughter is three and a half and i let her play on the internet (supervised). she plays on nickjr., disney playhouse, and pbs kids. pbs kids seems to be the most educational (luckily it's her favorite). i'm looking for free online (or free downloadable) games that help with recognizing numbers and the alphabet. she is actually starting to spell, so spelling games would be good too. anyone know of anything like this for ages 2-5?

  1. Some of our favorites:

  2. Well..it's not free.. but JumpStart computer games. They have one for each age level, preschool and up.

I remember playing these when i was in like kindergarten until about 3rd or 4th grade (i'm 15 now) and they were a lot of fun.

If she seems to be advanced, get her the next one up. I think i played the 3rd grade one when i was in 1st grade. It can give her a challenge. So if she's starting to spell, maybe get her the kindergarten one.

maybe you could get these for her for her birthday, or a holliday or something.

  3. I second ateachmom's answer! Starfall.com is an excellent site for emergent readers! It has stories, songs, printouts, etc. There are a lot of activities your daughter can do safely there without much guidance from you. Also, the Starlight Foundation's website is both educational and fun. It has games designed to help children with often debilitating diseases or conditions cope with the discomfort or anxiety caused by their illness (click on the second link and scroll down to see the programs). I like Quest for the Code. Edheads is a fun exploration site where you can explore the mechanics of simple machines or even perform virtual surgery (maybe one of your daughter will be inspired to pursue a career in medicine). Children's author Jan Brett's website is full of activities for young children. You can watch her tell stories or play interactive games on the site. Of course, there are Nick Jr, PBS Kids, Sesame Street, Disney, and Noggin, though some offer activities that I think are more suitable for older children. Again, I cannot praise Starfall enough. I've used it in school with children in Kindergarten and first grade, but it has lots of activities for younger children to explore. Thank you for seeking information about educational sites and not simply computer entertainment. Cheers!
