Edvald Boasson Hagen could not fulfil his dream of winning the best young rider jersey at the Tour de France prologue
Edvald Boasson Hagen of Team Sky never targeted the Tour de France prologue but the cyclist was optimistic to win the young rider jersey during the stage.
He finished 11 seconds behind the race leader and occupied the fifth position during the prologue stage of the race.
Fabian Cancellara finished the race in a quickest time of 7 minutes and 13 seconds and secured the top spot.
Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky Procycling finished 7 seconds behind at the second position with Sylvain Chavanel of Team Omega Pharma-QuickStep and Tejay van Garderen of Team BMC achieving the third and the fourth positions respectively.
The Norwegian fell just one second short of winning the young rider’s jersey during the contest and had to settle for the second position.
Tejay van Garderen of Team BMC wins the category with Patrick Gretsch of Team Argos-Shimano securing the third spot.
Nevertheless, Hagen was happy with his overall performance at the race, “I am very pleased. It was a bit sour when the white jersey went up in smoke there at the end, but it was a good start,” Boasson Hagen told procycling.no.
Team Director Dave Brailsford cited that Edvald will be given full team support if he stays at the top of the overall classifications in the final week of the race.
“Edvald has shown that he has a fantastic finish, and especially when the final is hard. There are no hard edges here, and then there is no reason why Edvald should not be there,” he explained.
The 25-year-old has filled his bag with several victories in the current season including an overall victory, a stage 4 win, the points classifications and the young riders classifications at the Glava Tour of Norway.
He also bagged stages at the Tirreno-Adriatico, Volta ao Algarve and the Criterium du Dauphine in the first half of the 2012 season.
The 25-year-old finished third during the stage 1 of the race and currently holds the fifth overall position after the stage 1 classifications.
Fabian Cancellara of Team RadioShack-Nissan is leading the category with Bradley Wiggins, Sylvain Chavanel and Tejay van Garderen holding the next four positions.
