Edward Figueroa misses the cut by 1 shot at Puerto Rico Open
By showing a poor performance, Edward Figueroa failed to make the cut at the Puerto Rico Open, after the completion of the second round.
The 18-year-old Naples native scored an even-par 72 and 2-over 74, in the first and second rounds, respectively. His combined scores for the two rounds were 146 strokes in total.
All the players who scored a 146 till Friday missed the cut, as the minimum requirement to qualify for the third round was of 145 strokes.
One stroke over 145 became the reason for the disqualification of the young professional from the tournament.
He bogeyed several holes and lost all hope. He had a chance to improve his score by making birdies, but was unable to score well in both the rounds.
In mid-January, Figueroa won the AJGA’s Puerto Rico Junior Open and got selected for the tournament’s field. His performance was tremendous and he competed well against the others.
However, the increased competition and leading scores of the professionals landed the former Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) player in trouble.
He was unable to compete with the others and also failed to score well at the Trump International Golf Club.
Similarly, several other renowned players also missed the cut for finishing two rounds higher than the score of 145.
Some of these famous players were Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas, American Kyle Thompson, David Duval, Arjun Atwal from India, Nicholas Thompson an American, Hunter Haas and the Swedish Daniel Chopra.
Matt Jones is the current leader of the tournament. He has scored an 11-under par and 133 strokes up till now. He competed well against the other professionals and scored several birdies.
The Australian native was tremendous on the course, as he only bogeyed once in the first round and finished a bogey-free second round.
George McNeill is on the second position and three strokes behind the leader. He and Jones finished tied in the first round, but several more birdies from Jones took him to the leading position.
Ryo Ishikawa and Todd Hamilton were tied for the third position by scoring a 7-under 137 and were four strokes behind the leading position.
Now, on Saturday, the third round will take place. It is highly anticipated that the competition will be even tougher between the top-10 players.
