Edward Figueroa ready for action at Puerto Rico Open – Golf News
The senior at St. John Neumann High School, Edward Figueroa, will be seen in action at the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open.
He made it to the event because of the exemption he received after winning the American Junior Golf Association's Puerto Rico Junior Open in January, 2012.
Figueroa stunned his opponents in the Junior Open with two consecutive birdies to take a single-stroke victory in the end.
According to Figueroa, he felt double-pressure when he had final two holes left in the tournament.
They were crucial for a win as well as helping him earn a ticket for the Trump International Golf Club in Rio Grande.
Figueroa told the reporters after reaching the venue that he had been thinking continuously since he qualified for the tournament.
He did plenty of practice in order to perform well and remain in contention for a good finish in the tournament.
"That's all I've been thinking about -- practicing, getting ready for this," said Figueroa, whose dad is from Puerto Rico. "This is all I've been waiting for".
According to Brent Jensen, the Florida Gulf Coast University's golf coach, Figueroa’s selection in the Puerto Rico Open will also benefit the university’s golf programme as the player signed with the team in fall last year.
Therefore, wherever he will play, he will represent the University’s golf team, which will automatically give an exposure to the programmes.
"I think it does a number of things for our program, from exposure to recruiting, to being able to promote our program within the local community," FGCU coach Brent Jensen said.
He went on, "That gets our name out all over the place, just like having (former Eagle) Derek Lamely being out on the tour".
Despite having plenty of practice prior to the tournament starts, the player says that he is more focused on learning from the senior players rather than setting a specific goal for the score.
He added by saying that the weather at Trump International is really difficult, making the match harder to play.
The gust of winds will play a major role in disturbing the player’s overall game. Therefore, he believes that making the cut will be more than enough for him.
