Edward Wright grabs lead on Day 1 of 2012 Finn Gold Cup – Sailing News
After a thrilling sailing display on Falmouth waters, Edward Wright was able to lead the 2012 Finn Gold Cup at the conclusion of Day 1 proceedings. Wright clinched a bullet and a second podium finish to hit the top spot with three points. Great Britain’s
Ben Ainslie was able to claim the second position overall with four points after compiling a bullet and a third podium.
The Finn fleet had high hopes to start the regatta tremendously but the forecast was not according to their liking. The winds were absent on the racing area which made the fleet wait on the shores for some breeze to fill in. The races were delayed because
of the lack of winds. However, around 2pm, some breeze began wafting around the race course which allowed the sailors to launch their boats into the Falmouth waters.
Due to the late start, only two races were initiated by the race committee. In the first race, Russia’s Egor Terpigorev grabbed early lead but was unable to maintain it and Ainslie crossed him to be in the first place. The British sailor kept the lead and
finished first in the opening race.
A tussling completion held in the second race as three sailors, Wright, Jorge Zarif of Brazil and Timo Haggort from Nederland were in the front and were doing their best to hit the leading podium.
However, Wright was successful in claiming the leading position which he kept until the finish of the second race. With convincing scores in both races, Wright occupied the top podium place in the overall standings of the regatta.
