Edwin Ekiring topples Marvin Lin in Men’s Singles second round at US Open Grand Prix Gold 2012
Uganda’s top shuttler Edwin Ekiring defied all odds to secure his berth in Men’s Singles round-of-16 after beating Marvin Lin of USA in Men’s Singles second round at the Yonex OCBC US Open Grand Prix Gold 2012 on Tuesday, July 3, in Los Angeles.
The spirited Ekiring, who is seeded at number 16 in Men’s Singles main draw of the championship, put up staggering show of attacking badminton and gave a severe lesson to the local shuttler by ending the match in an emphatic fashion.
The higher ranked Ekiring was on a different level while playing against his un-seeded opponent and grabbed a comprehensive victory while ending up the contest in just 18 minutes with a sensational margin on the score board.
On the other hand, the lower ranked Marvin could not show his class as he failed to match the speed of his rival and remained struggling to find gaps in the court. He had no answer to the fireworks of Ekiring and lost the match in straight games without
showing a strong resistance.
In the first game, Ekiring did not waste any time and took a small lead at the initial stage by playing positive and controlled badminton. He dictated the pace of rallies quite easily and set up a fabulous lead of 11-7 until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Ekiring showed no mercy to Marvin as he continued his fast and positive play without losing his focus on court and clinched the first set in a tremendous fashion by putting up a huge 21-13 score on the board.
In the second game, Ekiring again controlled the pace at opening rallies and took an early lead. He was in spectacular form as he did not let Marvin to make the score levelled even for a single time until the break when he was ahead at 11-7.
After the one-minute break, Ekiring remained consistent on court as he did not slow down his speed and also kept his rival moving in all areas. He did not face any trouble from his local opponent and lost the set with a 21-13 score on the board.
Ekiring emerged as winner in straight games with a smashing score of 21-13 and 21-13.
