Edwin Jackson struggles as Washington Nationals lose to St. Louis Cardinals 2-12 - MLB Update
Starter Edwin Jackson crumbles on the mound as he cost the Washington Nationals a 2-12 humiliation against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri on September 28, 2012 in the first game of the three match series.
Jackson leaked nine runs in little more than one inning. His poor throws in the beginning and the resultant runs coming off them never allowed the Nationals to settle down.
In the face of a huge deficit, it was extremely hard for the Nationals to launch a counter-attack which could take them past the Cardinals. Washington’s offence managed six hits on Friday which were insufficient to lead them to victory.
Getting a starter hammered so badly in a match is not a great sign for the Nationals going into the playoffs. Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson has a reason to be concerned about. A beginning of a decline from there onward will be the last thing that he wants.
Johnson will be looking for a victory in order to keep the incredible momentum of the Nationals in the season afloat.
Other than the starter, the Nationals witnessed their relief pitcher Mike Gonzalez giving up three runs in the last inning. In a nutshell, Friday’s game was a complete failure of the Nationals’ pitching crew. Repetition of such a show again will be disastrous
for their quest ahead in the season.
As far as the offence was concerned, pinch hitter Roger Bernadina slammed a home-run for Washington.
Jackson is disheartened after becoming a cause of the defeat of his side. What adds to his woes is the fact that his club currently is aiming for achieving something substantial in the season.
"Today's game was just very disappointing and embarrassing," Jackson said. "Your club is in a pennant race and you have a game like that, it definitely leaves a bitter taste in your mouth that you did absolutely nothing to give your team a chance to win.
That didn't have any effect at all. No pressure, no added emotions or anything like that."
There are two more games remaining in the series. The Nationals will be trying their best to bounce back and get some momentum going.
